Opening ceremony Creative Amsterdam 2011
10.00 am - 10.30 am, Main Hall

Programme: Alderperson Carolien Gehrels, responsible of Economic Affairs, Art and Culture of the City of Amsterdam, is proud of the creative entrepreneurship and international ambitions and success of Amsterdam’s finest creatives. We, in turn, are delighted by the fact that the Carolien Gehrels will open Creative Amsterdam 2011. Victor van der Chijs was recently made figurehead of the Dutch creative industry. His assignment: present a report aimed at making the Dutch creative sector more battle-ready both nationally and internationally. OMA has been successful as an architecture agency for decades and it is their international strategy that made the Dutch government decide van der Chijs should be given the assignment. He will elaborate on his mission and share his insights with us.

Speakers: Alderperson Carolien Gehrels and Victor van der Chijs.

The American Dream
10.30 am - 11.15 am, Main Hall

Creative Landscapes: NYC
11.45 am – 13.00 pm, Main Hall

Programme: Ask a random creative where he would most like to work, chances are the answer would be New York. This also applies to many Dutch creatives. No other city can match the attractive powers of this metropolis. That said, the creative competition in NYC is fierce and the work pressure enormous. In this session, you wil hear stories straight from the battlefield of several Dutch creatives that have more than proven themselves in this competitive environment.

Speakers: Pieter Henket, Florian Idenburg, Sebastiaan Bremer and Gilian Schrofer.

Innovative Landscapes: California
11.45 am – 12.45 pm, Small Hall

Programme: The golden ingredients of the creative industry in California? An all-encompassing media culture, state-of-the-art software developers and a dense concentration of venture capitalists. These things make California the place par excellence for Dutch software developers to continue their growth from local to global player.

Speakers: Wilbert Plijnaar (Universal), Jeroen Elfferich (Ex Machina) and Hans Brouwer (MassiveMusic).

Enter the Dragon
14.00 pm - 15.00 pm, Main Hall

Programme: The Chinese Dream sounds very attractive: the near-infinite scope of the national market, low start-up costs and the growing prosperity. But what is the best entry strategy for a creative company? And what kind of role could the Dutch government play in this regard? That’s what Margriet Leemhuis (Ambassador International Cultural Cooperation) and Victor van der Chijs (managing director & partner OMA) will discuss. The talks will be followed by an open debate on personal experiences between the policymakers, the creative entrepreneurs, and visitors.

Speakers: Margriet Leemhuis (Ambassador International Cultural Cooperation), Victor van der Chijs (managing director & partner OMA), Ton van Zeeland (Consul General Guangzhou), Jorg van der Hoven (Ask4Me Group) and Peter Slavenburg (NorthernLight).

Creative Shanghai
15.15 pm - 16.45 pm, Main Hall

Programme: Most creative companies take their first steps into the Chinese market via Shanghai. The city mainly attracts service-oriented companies. What does this say about the creative climate in Shanghai? And what are the conditions the creative entrepreneurs must fulfil to be successful here? You will learn the answers to these questions and more straight from the mouths of successful Dutch pioneers in the Shanghai creative industries.

Speakers: Marc van der Chijs (Spil Games), Peter Slavenburg (NorthernLight), Remi Oerlemans (DVP-China), Hans Brouwer (MassiveMusic) and Richelle Groen (Adidas NEO).

Creative Guangzhou
16 pm – 17.30 pm, Small hall

Programme: Guangzhou is considered the factory of the world. This image is changing due to the arrival of a growing number of creatives. That, in turn, is creating a paradigm shift from ‘Made in Guangzhou’ to ‘Designed in Guangzhou’. Three Dutch creatives talk about enterprise and design in the Pearl River Delta.

Speakers: Mark Hemel (Information Based Architecture), Jorg van den Hoven (Ask4Me) and Rem D. Koolhaas (United Nude)

Day closing: China changes you & opening Dutch DFA knowledge cycle
17.00 pm - 17.45 pm, Main Hall

Programme: ‘You can’t change China, China changes you’ is the title of a book about designing and building in China, written by John van de Water. In it he describes the development of the work and thinking of NEXT architects in China. It starts with the very earliest initiatives and takes the reader through the construction of over one million square metres of projects in China. Directly followed by the opening of the Dutch DFA knowledge cycle Guangzhou.

Speakers: John van de Water & opening by Ton van Zeeland.

SICA; From BRIC to MIST
20.00 pm – 22.00 pm, Main Hall

Programme: The session “After the BRIC, the MIST?” will focus on developments in the global economy and the opportunities these developments offer the Dutch creative sector. The so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) have acquired a prominent position in Dutch international cultural policy. Recently, Goldman Sachs – responsible for the expression ‘BRIC’ – defined a new group of upcoming economies, the MIST countries: Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea and Turkey.

Is this a case of “after the BRIC, the MIST”? And if so, should Dutch cultural policy and the creative sector focus on these countries? What is the added value of such labels for ambitious cultural organizations and for developing sustainable international exchange? Maybe there are other strategies for working out international opportunities for Dutch organizations in an ever-dynamic world? We welcome you to actively participate during this session.

The panel is chaired by Paul Laseur (BNR Nieuwsradio). Besides a number of foreign speakers, Dutch creative entrepreneurs who are active in emerging economies, such as China, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea, will have the opportunity to share their experiences.

20.00 pm – 22.00 pm, Small Hall

Programme: Items Live will close the first evening of Creative Amsterdam with a talkshow on Dutch Design versus culture clash. How Dutch can a designer really be in New York or Shanghai? Does he need to adapt, or does he actually benefit from the fact that he is an outsider?

Speakers (subject to change): shoe designer Rem D. Koolhaas from Guangzhou, architect Florian Idenburg from New York, Carlien Helmink of fashion label Studio JUX in Nepal and Items Live columnist Joost Overbeek.
