Profile: Jaap Spreeuwenberg

Jaap Spreeuwenberg is the driving motor behind Coolpolitics; a dynamic company that develops projects that, among other things, promotes the interweaving of youth culture and scientific knowledge. That unique combination invariably yields substantive and creative productions. Coolpolitics collaborates with MTV, MOJO and Sp!ts.

Company name:
Coolpolitics.

Company founding date:
March 2002.

Place of business:
Amsterdam.

Names of founders:
Jaap Spreeuwenberg.

Ages of founders:
32.

About the company:
Coolpolitics organises projects on politics, society, art and science; from debates at festivals to television shows, film festivals, and a magazine.

Current project:
At the moment, we are engaged in a number of new projects on art and entrepreneurship.

Source of inspiration:
Jamie Oliver. I believe what he did for cooking can also be done with commitment. Radiating passion, knowing what you’re talking about, but always sticking to the basics and not making things too complicated.

The big business tycoons are also a major source of inspiration. Thinking bigger than your own comfort zone always makes more possible than you imagined before.

My big idea:
Currently, the democratization of art. I think it’s amazing to see how Damien Hirst was able to bypass the intermediaries.

Favourite tools:
To be honest, I’m not really all that much of a gadget man.

Favourite website:
www.myc4.com This is a good platform for combating poverty in Africa with the use of private micro-loans.

Hobby:
Travelling to countries that I haven’t been to before.

Best advice I ever received:
Try not to shake up everyone around you with all the new plans in your head; in other words, always choose the most appropriate moment for sharing your plans with others.

Biggest blunder:
Wanting to expand my business across European without the necessary decisiveness and deep pockets.

Tips for professional colleagues:
Do what most interests you. If you enjoy doing it, there will always be enough people out there who will recognize it – as long as it is authentic.

As an ambassador of Amsterdam, I would...
Tell everyone that Amsterdam is an excellent place to live. Not only because of the city itself, but particularly thanks to the people that live here.
